Plants foliose, up to 20 cm across, usually in the form of expanded sheets or tufted rosettes; thallus one cell layer thick without marginal teeth. Holdfast of basal rhizoids. Colour purplish to grey ordull green, texture firm and glossy; the plants are quite tough and not easily torn when mature.
