For me, smoothie recipes date back to the 1980's in Canada, when I suffered fom exhaustion and decided it was time to clean up my act. I was so incredibly tired for a couple of years that I couldn't go about my normal activities. I ended up leaving my high powered corporate career and totally changing my lifestyle and the food I ate. My Natural Health Practitioner had recommended a daily diet high in sprouts (especially sunflower and buckwheat) and other superfoods, made into smoothies. I believe it put me back on track!
I was first put in touch with sunflower & buckwheat sprouts through an organisation then called 'Supersprouts', ( now called Toronto Sprouts) located in the city of Toronto where I lived. I used to consume 4 large ziplock bags of sunflower sprouts and 2 large bags of buckwheat sprouts per week mixed with other very nutritious ingredients, especially seaweed. Supersprouts was very 'avant-garde' in its teaching on raw nutrition even back then. They invited guest speakers: that is where I saw & heard David Wolfe for the first time at an evening talk for the launch of his first book (Nature's first law). I remember some of his concepts but what left a lasting impression was the table full of exotic fruits to taste! That night I had durian, mangosteen and dragon fruit (to name only a few...) for the first time.
Sprouts are extremely cleansing and very nutritious. They are the foundation of the living food diet. Sprouting makes the all the vital nutrients & enzymes present in the seed available to the human body, and they stimulate the body's inherent self-cleansing and healing abilities.
Seaweed on the other hand, is a nutrition powerhouse. Definitely one of nature's superfoods, it simply contains everything the body requires: all minerals, trace elements & vitamins, essential amino & fatty acids, anti-oxidants, fibre, protein, no cholesterol, very low fat, low GI sugars, and a store of life extending compounds that science is just starting to understand. My knowledge of seaweed was very limited while in Canada, I thought of it as a healthy supplement. But coming to New Zealand and working with seaweed everyday for the last ten years has opened my eyes to its variety & versatility. I haven't stopped making smoothies, using various powdered seaweed as a key ingredient, but I have also explored other ways to integrate them to our everyday food.
But I hear you say...' I don't think I can handle the taste of seaweed in a smoothie!'
Well, that is because most people assume that seaweeds have a strong taste or limited ability to combine with land food...nothing is further from the truth! Only small amounts of seaweed are required in smoothies because of their high concentration in nutrients. It is essential to eat seaweed regularly to nourish & replenish the various functions of the body; nutritional deficiency and body balance are complex problems that can't be resolved overnight but rather through a consistent process that strengthens every cell in the body. It is no secret that many contemporary ailments have been linked to poor nutrition, even in countries where much is available. Malnutrition is responsible for the break down of the body's functions and for its failure to heal itself.
Seaweed can be consumed in many forms in all meals & dishes, even dessert! It is also an excellent addition to cereals & smoothies to start the day nutritiously !!!
Here are a few good combinations:
CHOCOLATE GINGER SMOOTHIE
Karengo's flavour goes particularly well with chocolate & ginger
1/2 cup of raw almonds soaked overnight in 1 cup of filtered water (or 1 1/2 cups almond milk)
1 ripe banana
1/2 tsp karengo granules
2 tsp chia seeds (preferably soaked overnight)
1 tsp flax-seed oil
1 tsp Cacao powder
1 cup ice cubes
¼ tsp grated fresh ginger (or ginger syrup to taste)
Honey or stevia to taste
Toss everything in the blender and puree!
Pacific Harvest's Kelp has a very mild taste, just a bit salty
Coconut water & meat from young coconut (coconut milk or cream can be used instead)
1 cup frozen berries of your choice
1/2 tsp coconut butter
1/2 tsp kelp powder
1/4 cup macadamia nuts soaked in 1/2 cup filtered water overnight
1 cup ice cubes
maple syrup to taste (optional)
Toss everything in the blender and enjoy!
1 tbsp dried wakame soaked in 1/2 cup warm water for 5 minutes
1 frozen banana
1/4 of a fresh pineapple, skinned and cut in pieces
1/2 tsp Organic Spirulina
6 large green leaves washed (curly kale, silverbeet, spinach etc...) or a combi of sunflower & buckwheat sprouts if available
juice of one lemon
1 tsp flax-seed oil
cold filtered water or ice cubes as required
agave syrup or honey to taste
Toss everything in the blender and try!
